Bulgaria didn’t just host the Giro d’Italia – it turned it into a national celebration. According to preliminary data from organizers and local authorities, over 1,000,000 people filled the highways, streets, and squares over the three days of racing to be part of the largest sporting event in the country's history.
When the pink caravan set off from the cobbled streets of Nesebar, few expected such a massive turnout. But the reality exceeded all forecasts. From the Black Sea coast through the historic capital Veliko Tarnovo, to the grand finale in the heart of Sofia, Bulgaria proved its hunger for world-class sport and its capacity for "perfect organization," as described by Race Director Paolo Bellino.
A Sea of People and Emotions
The first stage by the sea gathered hundreds of thousands along the coastline and the road to Sozopol. However, the true sensation took place inland. The climb to Tarnovo was a literal "wall of fans," reminiscent of the iconic Alpine passes.
- Burgas and Nesebar: Over 250,000 people along the route and at the official opening ceremony.
- Veliko Tarnovo: Packed squares and tens of thousands along the mountain roads.
- Plovdiv and Sofia: A spectacular start and even more spectacular finale where the capital was literally paralyzed by enthusiasm – from "Tsarigradsko Shose" Blvd to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the space was crowded with fans from all over Bulgaria and neighboring Balkan countries.
"The Most Fantastic Start in History"
Giro Director Paolo Bellino did not hide his admiration:
"What we have seen here is incredible. Bulgaria welcomed us with an energy rarely seen even in Italy. This is the most fantastic Grande Partenza outside of Italy in the history of our race."
A Global Spotlight
Beyond the colossal number of people watching the three stages live, the Giro placed Bulgaria in the television spotlight for over 200 million viewers worldwide. The stunning footage of the country has become the greatest advertisement for Bulgarian tourism in history.
